Late School Start Survey
February 15, 2010
Dear Parents:
District Administration is considering an option that would reduce the necessity to extend the school year because of weather-related school closings. Some Wisconsin school districts use two-hour late starts in situations when the weather or conditions are expected to significantly improve early in the morning hours. A two-hour late start provides time for the city and townships to plow and sand roads early in the morning, making them safer for travel.
In a two-hour late start, bus routes would run exactly two hours later, and school would begin exactly two hours later than normal. School would end at the same time as scheduled, and students would return home at the end of the day on the same route at the same time.
In a two-hour late start, the District would not be required to make up the day on the school calendar, reducing the chances that days would be added to the end of the school year. However, we recognize that a two-hour late start causes a number of inconveniences for parents. Therefore, we are seeking your opinion regarding implementation of two-hour late starts in the future, but not before next school year.
