Community invited to help name La Crosse elementary schools

LA CROSSE, Wis., (February 2, 2026) – The School District of La Crosse is inviting students, families, staff, and community members to help suggest names for two elementary schools that will bring school communities together through district projects approved by voters.
The naming process includes a new elementary school at the Hogan Administrative site, which will bring together the Emerson and Spence Elementary School communities, and a renovated elementary school at the State Road site, uniting the State Road and Hintgen Elementary School communities.
“This naming opportunity is possible because of the strong support our community showed during the referendum,” said Dr. Aaron Engel, superintendent of schools. “When we bring school communities together, it’s important to pause and be intentional. A school’s name helps shape identity, culture, and pride, and inviting our entire La Crosse community into that conversation matters. It reflects who we are and what we value as a district.”
Community members are invited to submit naming ideas through an online survey. Suggested names should be timeless, inclusive, easy to pronounce, and connected to the local community, place, or the purpose of learning. To ensure long-term relevance and neutrality, names should not honor living individuals.
All submitted names will be included in a collaborative brainstorming process within each school community. That process will result in three potential names, along with the option of retaining the current site name, being forwarded to the Board of Education. By policy, the Board serves as the final decision-maker.
The survey will remain open through February 12, 2026. The naming process and final selection are expected to be completed by the end of April.
