Board of Education selects names for new and consolidated elementary schools

LA CROSSE, Wis., (April 21, 2026) - The School District of La Crosse Board of Education voted Monday night to approve names for the new and consolidated elementary schools serving students and families across the community.

The new elementary school created by combining Emerson and Spence will be named Hogan Elementary School. The consolidated elementary school at the State Road site, bringing together Hintgen and State Road, will be named Pammel Creek Elementary School.

The names reflect months of input from students, staff, families, and community members, and mark an important step in building two new, unified school communities.

The district designed the naming process to be collaborative, transparent, and rooted in community voice. Each school gathered input and formed a representative committee of staff, parents, and community members. Committees reviewed suggestions using clear district guidelines, discussed the meaning behind each name, and worked with staff to narrow options through a voting process.

Committees from each school pairing then came together to identify final recommendations for the Board of Education, along with the current school name as an additional option.

Throughout the process, names were evaluated to ensure they reflect positive values, are easy for students and families to recognize, and will stand the test of time. Committees also prioritized inclusivity and a strong connection to the La Crosse community.

Many of the final recommendations drew from the area’s natural features — including bluffs, rivers, and wooded landscapes — helping create a shared identity rooted in place and belonging. The process also balanced honoring the history and pride of each existing school while creating a new identity for the future. Work will continue to recognize and celebrate the legacy of Emerson, Spence, Hintgen, and State Road within the new schools.

“These names represent more than a building. They reflect our community, our shared values, and the future we’re building for our students,” said Dr. Aaron Engel, superintendent of schools. “This process brought people together, and the result is something our students and staff can be proud of for years to come.”

Both schools are part of the district’s ongoing efforts to provide modern learning environments that support student success and strong staff collaboration.
