Intradistrict Transfers
Overview
One of the strengths of the School District of La Crosse is the variety of opportunities and choices offered to families, especially when it comes to school choice. Each home address within the district boundaries has pre-determined neighborhood schools that students may attend. Enrollment is guaranteed at your neighborhood school.
In addition to our neighborhood schools, the School District of La Crosse offers a variety of charter and choice schools that offer new and different learning environments.
Parents may use our Intradistrict Transfer Application to request a transfer to a different school within our district.
Application Window
Parents interested in requesting a transfer to a different school in the district must complete an Intradistrict Transfer Application between February 1st – April 30th for the following school year. For applications received by April 30th, every effort will be made to communicate the status of your application by May 30th. Applications received after April 30th, may take up to two weeks to process.

Intradistrict Transfers Timeline
When and how do I apply?
Parents interested in requesting a transfer to a different school in the district must complete an Intradistrict Transfer Application between February 1st and April 30th for the following school year.
If you do not have access to a computer or internet access, you can fill out an online application at your current school, at the Hogan Administration Center in our Welcome Center, or visit your local public library computer lab.
How do I know if my application is approved?
All applications are considered. The completion of an application is not a guarantee of placement. Your application may be approved, denied, or placed on a waitlist. For applications received by April 30th, every effort will be made to communicate the status of your application by May 30.
What if I apply after April 30th?
Applications received after April 30th may be denied. Applications received after April 30th will be considered on an individual basis and for unique circumstances only. Again, the rationale for this stringent deadline is because our district must make critically important staffing decisions based on this student enrollment process. Applications can take up to two weeks to be processed if received after April 30th.
What is a charter school?
Charter schools are public, nonsectarian schools created through a business-like contract or “charter” between the charter governance board and the sponsoring school board or other chartering authority. All School District of La Crosse charter schools are tuition free for Wisconsin residents. Families living outside the district boundaries, also need to apply for open enrollment. Students wishing to attend a charter school from outside of the state would be subject to Wisconsin tuition guidelines.
What is a choice school?
Choice schools include students from the boundary attendance area as well as students that choose to attend through the choice and charter process. These schools deliver curriculum using a thematic approach or have a unique calendar.

Elementary – Coulee Montessori (K-6), School of Technology & Arts (SOTA I) and Coulee Region Virtual Academy (CRVA)
Middle School – School of Technology & Arts (SOTA II)
Middle/High School – La Crosse Polytechnic School and Coulee Region Virtual Academy (CRVA)

Is transportation provided?
Transportation is provided for choice programs and charter schools. For all other intradistrict transfer requests, transportation is the responsibility of parents/guardians.
A shuttle will be provided from the boundary school to the choice and charter schools. Alternatively, a student may board the bus at any neighborhood elementary, middle, or high school (a school within the student’s same level). School start times do not allow the district to guarantee that a student can ride the bus from home to the boundary school and then catch the shuttle. Busing is provided only during the traditional school calendar (relevant for Hamilton and Northside year-round school). Only the shuttle from a school to the choice and charter schools will be provided with certainty.

Non-Discrimination Statement
These charter schools are authorized by the La Crosse School District. They are tuition-free public schools and do not discriminate in admission or retention on the grounds of age, race, color, national origin, religion, creed, handicap, disability, gender, sexual orientation, or physical condition. A school application for all students is required as part of the admissions process. Should applications exceed the capacity of the school, a random lottery will be held to ensure a fair enrollment process.
