District provides free healthy meals for kids during school closures

LA CROSSE, Wis., (March 18, 2020) – Schools are closed for the year but the School District of La Crosse’s #LunchLadyArmy continues to prepare and deliver nutritious breakfasts and lunches throughout the City of La Crosse. Over 32,000 meals have been distributed to local families so far during the closure period and that number will rise as work continues to support area kids.

As the need for a helping hand grows, so do opportunities from the district. Starting tomorrow, April 24, additional meals for the weekends (breakfasts and lunches) will be included in each Friday meal pack. The weekend meal packs will be available at all of the district’s neighborhood food sites.

Neighborhood food site location and additional meal pick up details:

  • All children 18 or younger in the household may receive breakfast and lunch meal daily
  • No identification is required
  • Please bring reusable bags

The district also has drive-up locations available at both Spence Elementary and Logan High Schools from 11:00am-12:00pm.

With the district’s commitment to connectivity for learning, the School District of La Crosse is also helping ensure that all students have access to the internet. At each neighborhood food site location, GO Riteway buses provide free WiFi service to support students’ internet needs. Buses will be available for walk-up and drive-up service, but students will not be allowed on the buses. All social distancing guidelines should be followed.

School nutrition staff continue to maintain a telephone hotline for those families who are unable to make it to or missed a stop time. Families can call 608.789.5880 for assistance. Nutrition Services has a limited number of drivers who will be able to make a delivery stop. The hotline is staffed from 8am-1pm, Monday through Friday.

If families need further assistance with meals, here is a searchable list of food pantries and other community resources in our area.
