LA CROSSE, Wis., (May 15, 2020) – As you know, the Wisconsin Supreme Court recently ruled that the Governor’s ’Safer At Home’ is unenforceable EXCEPT for those provisions having to do with K-12 public and private schools. As a result, the status of our schools has not changed. Our schools remain closed through June 30. Without the guidance from a statewide executive order and until our politicians are able to negotiate an agreeable replacement, our district is following the lead of the La Crosse County Health Department’s Statement of Unity and Call to Action. You can find that message here.

The dates from May 25 – June 5 will be used to bring closure to our traditional school year calendar. While the last day is June 5, you will receive a specific schedule from your principal for the time(s) in which you may come by the school and retrieve personal belongings and return devices. Since our schools are to remain closed through June 30, this will be a curbside event only. Parents and students will not be allowed access to the inside of the school building. If it is absolutely necessary to access the building, please arrange an appointment with the principal on a different day.

Thank you in advance for your commitment to return your devices in a timely manner. Upon return, our technology staff will be isolating the devices for several days and then preparing them to be traded in for new devices next year. It is imperative that devices are returned on the scheduled day so that we can ensure we have devices ready for the start of the next school year.

Finally, we invite you and your child to participate fully in our district’s ‘We Are La Crosse’, spirit week next week. It’s an end-of-the-year virtual celebration for everyone! There will be drawings for prizes. And you can nominate a teacher to be selected as a ‘Superhero Teacher,’ where they could win a $250 classroom grant from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation. Each day has a theme:

Monday – Pajama Day: Post a picture or video of you in your favorite PJs today.

Tuesday – Sports Team Day: Post a picture or video of you in your favorite team’s gear.

Wednesday – Workout Day: Post a picture or video of your favorite way to stay active.

Thursday – Superhero Day: Post a picture or video of you dressed as your favorite superhero (fictional or real like teachers, parents, healthcare workers, food service staff, firefighters, police officers, and more.)

Friday – “We Are La Crosse” Day: Post a picture or video of what you think makes La Crosse special. Your favorite place to go for fun, to eat, to relax. Show us what you think makes La Crosse an amazing place to live.

We hope you will have fun with us in bringing closure to a school year like none other. You can monitor the week’s events here, on our district’s Facebook page.

With our students at the forefront,

Randy Nelson
Superintendent of Schools
