Welcome to the Art Room!

In the art room, students have the ability to express themselves in many various ways. They get the opportunity to experiment with drawing, painting, building, printmaking, sculpting, coloring, and collaging. We learn about various artists throughout time and how they changed the world around them through their art. We critique art, discuss it, and learn from those who have created before us.

Your child will definitely have days where they see like they dunked themselves in paint, and I apologize now for that! The artistic process can be a very messy process, and I encourage the kids not to be afraid of trying something new that they may have never done before. That being said, I am also a firm believer that there are specific ways that we should behave with the materials to ensure that we are being respectful, responsible, safe, and allowing those around us to learn and experience art as well. If there is ever any concern that you have about your child, please feel free to contact me!

Thanks for your support and I look forward to our time together this year!

5th Grade Art

The main question that we focus our learning on in fifth grade is “Who makes art?” We look at inspirations around us in every day life and how artists use that to create their own art. We look at artist influences, cultures, and the beauty in the world around us as inspirations. We look into specific artists and how they create their art and why. We learn about some of the most well-known artists and why they are so famous and well-known with their art. We will refine skills, experiment with new techniques, and critique art like the masters. Each student had a chance at the beginning of the year to have a say in what projects we do this year. There will be many personal choices this year to help promote self-independence in their work that will allow them to start developing their own personal artistic style. We will also continue to work on the planning process rather than jumping straight into the project. We discuss different ways to solve artistic problems, we make many pre-sketches, and then make artistic decisions to determine the best route to make our art.

Projects so far this year:

Verb Color Wheels – mixing secondary and tertiary colors from only the primary colors

4th Grade Art

The main question that we focus our learning on in fourth grade is “How do artists get their ideas?” We look at inspirations around us in every day life and how artists use that to create their own art. We look at artist influences, cultures, and the beauty in the world around us as inspirations. We also delve deep into color theory and how we can mix our own colors only using the primary colors. We will refine skills, experiment with new techniques, and start learning how to critique art like the masters. Each student had a chance at the beginning of the year to have a say in what projects we do this year. There will be many personal choices this year to help promote self-independence in their work that will allow them to start developing their own personal artistic style. We also are putting more concentration on the planning process rather than jumping straight into the project. We discuss different ways to solve artistic problems, we make many pre-sketches, and then make artistic decisions to determine the best route to make our art.

Projects so far this year:

-French Curve Monsters – using the French Curve tracer to design a creative monster

3rd Grade Art

During third grade, we concentrate our learning based around the question, “Why do people make art?” We look at other cultures around the world and the art that they make there. We discuss pieces of their culture and compare and contrast it to our culture here in La Crosse. I want my students to realize that there is a big world out there and there are places that are very different than we are here, yet there are always similarities among us. We then make a work of art that is inspired by that culture and the art that is found in that region of the world.

Projects so far this year:

-Mexico: Day of the Dead Self-Portrait Skulls

Day of the Dead - Mexico

2nd Grade Art

The main idea that we concentrate on in second grade art is “What are the types of art?” We talk about how each type of art are each meant for different purposes, especially depending when in history the artwork was made. We discuss the different types: portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, still life, figures, collages, mosaics, and historical. We will experiment with mediums and styles to highlight the success of all students. We will paint, draw, build, sketch, mold, and make sculptures. We stress the importance of looking at things as inspiration for our art.

In kindergarten and first grade art, they are still learning how to use the supplies and the basics of the Elements of Art (shape, color, line, form, texture, value, space). Second grade art concentrates on how to look at the world around us and use it as inspiration to create our own art. We start to have more independence in our work and learn how to be an artist as an individual. We draw on our own experiences and ideas to create art that tells stories about us and what we know. We are also starting to verbalize what we see in art and compare it to other art that we have seen. Building the mental library of images, ideas, and inspirations is pivotal this year.

Projects so far this year:

Monsters to decorate for the Book Fair

-Winter Birch Trees – learning how to make things appear close and far

1st Grade Art

In first grade art, we concentrate on the question “What are the parts of art?” This pertains mostly to the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, space, texture, form, and value. We learn about how every piece of art has different combinations of these 7 elements and how to use them to create the art we envision. We look at famous artists and dissect how they used the elements in their artwork. We experiment with different art supplies to work with the elements in different ways. Our goal in first grade is to get a comprehensive understanding of the elements in order have the basic tools to create the art that we want to.

 Projects so far this year:

-Monsters to decorate the library for the Book Fair

-Fall Trees – learning how to draw and paint realistic looking trees

Kindergarten Art

In kindergarten art, we concentrate on the concept of “What is art made of?” This is the time when they really get to experiment with materials to figure out what each art tool is and how best to use it. They will experience things they may have never used before: oil pastels, paper mache, texture plates, recycled materials, clay, and many other supplies like pencils, markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue, scissors, paint, building blocks/legos. We will work on drawing, painting, building, sculpting, printmaking, collages, and experimenting with mixed media. We will look at famous artists throughout the ages, discussions about what makes art “art”, and have chances to experience different styles of art. We also will have many projects that relate to literature and discussions about how art can tell a story through images. We concentrate on how art is a way that we can use to express ourselves, especially when we can’t find the right words to do so.

Projects so far this year:

-Monsters – learned how to combine lines and shapes to create a monster for the Book Fair

-Lines – drew, painted, cut, and glued lines to create an abstract painting
