Welcome to Ms. Graham’s Third Grade Class!

I have been a teacher at State Road School for 23 years. I have taught various combinations of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, but have spent most of my career teaching 3rd graders, my favorite grade of all.

I received my first undergraduate degree in 1986 from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where I majored in English and Religion. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Minnesota a few years later.

Since graduation I have worked exclusively in education, although in a number of capacities. I have been a K-12 substitute teacher, a special education summer school teacher, an individual tutor, and a GED instructor at Western Technical College. Teaching 3rd grade, however, is my passion, and I intend to stay at State Road as a 3rd grade teacher for as long as possible!

Assignment Notebooks Keep Us Organized

Assignment Notebooks are used by all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students at State Road School to help them learn study skills, organization and responsibility. Here is how they are used in my classroom:

Every morning, students record the day’s activities and assignments in their Assignment Notebooks by copying them off the board. At the end of the day, the class together checks off all work that was completed at school and circles any work that needs to be completed for homework.

Students take their Assignment Notebooks home with them every night to share with parents. In this way, parents can easily see, and discuss with their child, what happened at school and what needs to be completed as homework.

When homework is completed, parents sign the notebook and have the option of adding a note to the teacher, if needed. Students then bring their notebook back to school each day.

Group of the Day:

Positive Behavior Reinforcement

Students in my classroom sit together in groups of three. Throughout the day, groups earn points for positive behaviors such as good listening, cooperation and following directions. At the end of each day, the group that has earned the most points becomes “Group of the Day.” Each member of this group receives a sticker and a gold “Group of the Day” certificate to take home. Members of the “Group of the Day” also earn special jobs and privileges the next day at school.

Hillview Field Trips

This year, once again, all 3rd grade students at State Road will take monthly walks to Hillview Care Center to spend time with our “senior friends.” The visits to Hillview are a community service for both the students and the residents as we build bridges across the generations. We generally go on the 3rd or 4th Wednesday of the month. On these days, we leave at 1:00 p.m. and walk through the school forest to Hillview for our 1:20 p.m. appointment. There, we present a short program of poems or songs and then share a craft activity with our “senior friends”. We leave the center around 2:10 p.m., so we are back to school by 2:30 p.m.It is very helpful to have additional adults along to help with the craft activity. Please feel free to come along with us if you can.  As a reminder, please be sure your volunteer card is updated in the office. Thanks for considering coming with us to Hillview!
