Welcome to the School of Technology and the Arts (SOTA I). My name is Ben Burns and I have been the principal since 2018. Prior to this I was an elementary associate principal for two years in Sun Prairie, WI. I have a background in psychology, childhood development, and leadership.
At SOTA I we focus on integrating the fine arts into, and across, our curriculum. Students have an opportunity to participate in drama classes twice a week, and can begin orchestra lessons in the second half of first grade. Additionally, we are always seeking out unique opportunities, whether through our partnership with Viterbo or artist-in-residences, to provide a fine arts experience for students.
As for technology, we are working to re-imagine what it means to be a school of technology in the year 2020. When SOTA was first started in 1995, technology in schools was rare – not the case anymore. We are focusing now on concepts such as practicing being a good digital citizen, coding/STEM, and being a creator vs. a consumer with technology.
Some additional key features of our school include our multi-age classrooms, joint parent-school governance, and assessment by performance.
As a public charter school, we are proud to be part of the School District of La Crosse. We are unique in the sense that we do not have an attendance area – all students enrolled do so by parent choice. We adhere to the same standards as the rest of the school district in terms of the knowledge and skills students are expected to master.
To apply, navigate to the ‘Choice and Charter Opportunities’ page from the ‘Parents’ tab on the school district’s main website.
