“”School Lunch Hero Day is a special time for students, staff, and parents to recognize the hardworking professionals in school cafeterias. Not only do these talented individuals prepare tasty meals for students, they do so in following complex rules, including strict nutritional standards, and navigate student food allergies, ethnic traditions, and varying preferences — all while offering service with a smile.

To celebrate, students and staff at Southern Bluffs Elementary hosted a surprise event to recognize a special School Lunch Hero. A large group of students, staff, friends, and family, will be joined by current and former nutrition services co-workers who have known the honoree to go through the breakfast serving line with cards, flowers, and well wishes to surprise this year’s School Lunch Hero.

This year the district recognized Shelly Abraham as a School Lunch Hero. Abraham has been with the district since 1984 and will retire at the end of this summer. She started as a cook and has been a nutrition manager for many years. Abraham has worked in at least half of the district’s kitchens in the course of her career.

“Shelly is a rock in our district – steady, strong, and always there to support those around her,” said Supervisor of School Nutrition Programs Lyn Halvorson. “She has had such an important impact in our district. Shelly has touched the lives of so many in a positive way during her 33 years here. She will definitely be missed.”””””[vc_gallery type=”flexslider_slide” interval=”0″ images=”11913,11914,11915,11912,11916,11917″ img_size=”625×417″]””
