ASQ Screening

Overview

Because your child’s first 5 years of life are so important, we want to help you provide the best start for your child. You’re invited to participate in the Ages & Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3) & Ages & Stages Questionnaire: Social Emotional (ASQ:SE). These online screening options provide reliable, accurate developmental and social-emotional screening for children between birth and age 6. Drawing on parents’ expert knowledge, ASQ has been specifically designed to pinpoint developmental progress and catch delays in young children—paving the way for meaningful next steps in learning, intervention, or monitoring.

If you have a child age 3-5 years old who is not currently enrolled in an 4K Preschool or Early Childhood Program within the La Crosse School District, you should complete our free online developmental screener.

The Developmental Screening is designed to:

  • Educate families about typical child development and growth

  • Develop/Expand awareness of available community resources

  • Identify young children in need of further assessment; the district has free resources!

The Screening looks at all areas of child development including:

  • How your child talks
  • How your child listens
  • How your child thinks
  • How your child moves
  • How your child plays
  • How your child is developing in their social and emotional skills

Why Perform Screening?

If you’re like most parents, you probably have a lot of questions when a doctor or teacher says your child will be screened. Regular screening provides a fast and helpful look at how your child is doing in important areas like communication, social skills, motor skills, and problem-solving skills. Screening can identify your child’s strengths, uncover new milestones to celebrate, and reveal any areas where your child may need support. It helps you understand your child’s development and know what to look for next. And it helps you work with doctors and educators to plan next steps when it makes the most difference—your child’s critical first years of life.

ASQ Screening

To access the questionnaire, click the link below, and choose the screener you’d like to complete. Most parents complete both the ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE for their child. Each questionnaire takes about 8-10 minutes to complete. A paper version of the screener can also be provided by contacting the preschool office.

What happens next?

Your online screener will be scored and then shared out with you via the email that you provide in your information. If you have concerns about the way that your child is developing in any area, the La Crosse School District has Early Childhood specialists who are able to help. We can follow-up with an in-person screening, discuss individual concerns over the phone, or set up a home-visit to discuss your concerns and next steps. When appropriate, a full developmental evaluation is recommended to dig in a little deeper and learn more about specific strengths and needs of your child. This also helps district staff determine if your child is eligible for any special services such as Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Early ChIldhood Support, Physical Therapy, and others; all which are free as part of your child’s public school education.
