To recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves every day, The School District of La Crosse will recognize National School Lunch Week from October 9-13, 2017. The theme, “Recipes for Success” is an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the district’s cafeteria staff and students who participate in the school lunch programs.

“A healthy lunch during the school day ensures our students are getting the best education they can,” said southside nutrition manager Heather Skiles. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the healthy and appealing choices we offer”.

National School Lunch Week will bring some special guests to Spence Elementary School this week. Wisconsin State Senator Jennifer Shilling help with lunch service today and Superintendent of Schools Randy Nelson will join the students and staff later this week.

The district served over 664,000 lunches to students during the 2016-17 school year. School nutrition professionals in the School District of La Crosse prepare breakfast and lunches every day that meet federal nutrition standards – limiting fat, calories, and sodium – and encourage students to choose from the fruits, vegetables, and whole grains offered with school meals.

The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program, which has been serving the nation’s children for over 60 years, requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards like offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole grain-rich foods, and limiting fat, calories, and sodium.

The “Recipes for Success” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association. For more information on National School Lunch Week, visit our school nutrition website by clicking here or visit the national School Nutrition Association website by clicking here.
